Rereading Rick Riordan: The Last Olympian

Good day, all! I'm Elan, and in lockdown I've unfortunately been stuck without an effective method to obtain new books. Thus, I've turned to rereading one of my favorite authors, Rick Riordan.

The most recent book I've reread is the last book of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Last Olympian. This action-packed ending to the original PJO series is breathtaking. Surprisingly, it is deep and well-written, which helps it stand out among the young-young adult fiction genre.

(Because The Last Olympian is the last book in the series, I'm gonna avoid talking about the specifics of the plot of the book itself, at least until my lovely spoilers section.)

In this series, we readers follow Perseus Jackson, only child of Sally Jackson, as he finds himself at the center of a whirling Great Prophecy. Finding out that his wayward father is none other than a Greek god, Percy now has to navigate a series of events that plague his life. From being framed for stealing the temperamental sky god Zeus' lightning bolt to fighting his way through the labyrinths of Daedalus, Percy quickly becomes one of the champions of the demigods.

---------------------------------------------- SPOILERS AHEAD --------------------------------------------

In The Last Olympian, the events of the series come to a breaking point, and Riordan expertly weaves the development of Percy from a scared boy to a scared, but determined one. Another, albeit unusual, part I like about The Last Olympian is how Percy and Annabeth, the female main character, interact. The book is a giant mishmash of their anguish and denial of feelings towards one another, which I find both immensely amusing and fun to read.

Overall, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is an amazing series and there is no way that I've done it justice here, but unlike other books I've reread, Riordan's books only get better each time I get back to them. Whether you're a newcomer to his books or a veteran fan like me, Percy Jackson does not disappoint!

(P.S. Riordan is now working on a live action Percy Jackson series, I hope y'all are as hyped for it as I am!)

  1. I remember burning through the Percy Jackson series in 4th and 5th grade. I haven't read it in a while but I did hear about the live action show. I excited and really hope that it's gonna be better than the movies. I also found this series to just get better as the story goes on. Overall, great job on this review!

  2. I imagine many people, including me, have read or at least heard of this book/series. You did a nice job talking about the overall plot and characters and the post was fun to read. I haven't read the series in a while and it sounds like rereading it is just as exciting, so I may have to find the copies of the book that I might have at home.

  3. Great review! I read the Percy Jackson series a long time ago, and I remember liking it a lot. However, it's been a long time since then, and after reading your review, I might go back and reread the series to see if it's still as good as I remember.

  4. Nice review! Like everyone else, I have read the Percy Jackson series before, and your summary nicely encapsulated what the series is about. I liked that you focused on the Percy and Annabeth part of the story, because their relationship is (IMO) more unique than the standard fiction romance. I am just praying that the live action show doesn't become like the movies.

  5. I have good memories of reading the Percy Jackson series as a kid, but I haven't reread any of the books for a while. You did a good job of mentioning the action and the relationship between Percy and Annabeth, and your summary was short but clear. I also agree that there are deep parts to the books and that they aren't just kid's storied. Great review!

  6. Percy Jackson was probably my favorite series in middle school, but I never read the second installment of the series that you review. I find it impressive that you didn't reveal anything important while also introducing the premise and important relationships in the story, even in the spoilers section. This review has inspired me to go read the second series. Thanks for reminding me of this book!

  7. Nice review. Like many other people, the Percy Jackson series was one of my favorites in elementary school, and I was recently thinking about rereading them in quarantine, but I was worried that they would be too childish and not entertaining enough to read again. Your review has successfully convinced me otherwise, and I look forwards to giving the books another go. And yeah, super excited for the series!!
